Altered Books

While I am between studios momentarily, I thought I might share one of my other art passions with you. Altered books, I know there are a lot of people who think it is wrong to 'destroy' old books, but these aren't being thrown away, they are being displayed and given another life. All the books I use were otherwise destined for landfill so I don't feel guilty. So I thought I would share them one at a time. This one was made from a really old book, so old that when I folded the pages they cracked! This piece is an ode to Nature, and is a nice way for me to display some of my favourite feathers, along with interesting leaves, some little bones and a couple of snail shells. I have included a little magnifying glass sitting in an old automotive spring. The rust, and age on the whole display is real except for the magnifying glass which I have quite yet finished ageing. In these pics the snail shell was only just glued on so the glue is still white. I just love the way the light is shining through that holey old leaf, making that cool shadow :) Cheers!
